Třebíč - In two years, tourists should be able to walk from the city center directly to the Basilica of St. Procopius in Třebíč without any problems. This basilica is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The town hall has been considering the construction of an access path from Žerotín Square to the basilica in the castle grounds for several years, but it has only recently succeeded in purchasing the necessary land. Ivan Přibík, the spokesperson for the town hall, said this today.
The several hundred meters long sidewalk is expected to cost several million crowns. The exact costs will be determined by the project, which the town hall wants to have ready by the end of this year. "The sidewalk will bring tourists from the back of Žerotín Square directly to the apse of the basilica. The pavement should correspond to the historical location, and stylized public lighting will be complemented by benches," said Přibík.
The castle area is now easily accessible from the north side, where a parking lot for cars and buses was recently established. Pedestrians, however, still have to approach the castle along the busy 9th of May street.
The basilica, along with the Jewish quarter, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in mid-2003. Being included in the prestigious list significantly increased the number of visitors to Třebíč.
