Brno - The demolition of the technical and economic building at the Faculty Hospital at St. Anne in Brno began today. It is to make way for the construction of the International Center for Clinical Research (ICRC). Doctors will develop new treatment methods for heart attacks, epilepsy, and other diseases there. The construction will last about a year and a half. The hospital has closed the entrance from Hybešova Street due to this, replacing it with a new one from Leitnerova, said spokesperson Šárka Urbánková to ČTK. The builders have planned the demolition for Saturday when fewer people are in the area. The machines must disturb as little dust as possible, so the dismantling of the building is accompanied by watering from a boom lift. According to the hospital director Petr Koška, safety is a priority during construction. Several people around the construction site are therefore responsible only for the movement of patients in the area. Special barriers around the construction site are to help reduce noise. They have been selected to let through less noise than conventional construction fencing. The construction of the ICRC, costing 1.9 billion crowns excluding VAT, is financed from the state budget. It is divided into two phases; after the first phase, doctors and researchers will move into the completed spaces in less than two years. Part of the buildings they will vacate will then be demolished. The total costs for the construction and equipment of the ICRC approach five billion crowns. The hospital has succeeded among projects competing for European funds. Part of the expenses will be covered from there. The ICRC is expected to develop new treatment methods for about 70 percent of diseases that people most commonly die from. The research plans in the treatment of heart attacks show where the researchers want to push medicine. According to the deputy director of the hospital, Tomáš Kára, doctors should not focus in the future on the consequences of complications but on determining who is at risk of a heart attack. Treatment should thus be possible even before the onset of the disease. The ICRC aims to involve Czech doctors in the forefront of medical research. The people of Brno are already collaborating on research tasks with experts from the prestigious American Mayo Clinic and will expand this collaboration at the ICRC.
