Lower Věstonice (Břeclavsko) - Today, the construction of the archeopark began between Lower Věstonice and Pavlov in Břeclavsko, which will present the era of mammoth hunters. Its center will be a modern building partially located underground, where visitors will find the most valuable local archaeological excavations. The visitor should feel that entering the underground takes them back in time to when there was a settlement of hunters at the exhibition site, said Petr Kubín, the director of the Mikulov Museum, to ČTK. The opening of the new permanent exhibition is planned for September next year. Its construction will cost 95.5 million crowns, with 75% covered by EU subsidies. The remainder will be paid by the state. The area of Lower Věstonice is among the world-famous regions inhabited by mammoth hunters. About 30,000 years ago, this site was populated so densely that scientists nicknamed it the Paleolithic New York. The most significant find is the Věstonice Venus, which is housed in the collections of the Moravian Museum in Brno. The new building will cover one of the settlements from the older Stone Age, which is preserved in the form in which it was found by archaeologists. The exhibition will also include dioramas depicting the life of the hunters. The creators of the exhibition anticipate that the archeopark could attract up to 40,000 tourists annually. From there, they will be able to head to nearby Lower Věstonice, where the original archaeological museum is located. However, its spaces are too cramped, and it was not possible to expand the building, thus a completely new exhibition will be created. The permanent exhibition Anthropos in Brno, which was established during the First Republic at the suggestion of researcher Karel Absolon, also relates to the oldest history of humanity. It was his scientific team that discovered the Věstonice Venus.
