The Third Faculty of Medicine of Charles University is planning the construction of a new educational center for half a billion

Prague - The Third Faculty of Medicine at Charles University is preparing to build a new teaching center in the Prague district of Vinohrady for approximately half a billion crowns. The architectural competition for its design was won by the team from the Ehl & Koumar architects studio. The jury selected it from 34 proposals, the faculty informed today in a press release.

"The existing Building A, which should primarily house research and scientific workplaces, will be complemented by the new Building B, which will have sufficient capacity for teaching all medical faculty students. The design includes a large lecture hall, capacity classrooms, a library, and a simulation center," described Dean Petr Widimský.

According to the proposal, it will be a separate glass pavilion with an internal atrium located in the grounds of the Vinohrady hospital. The faculty expects the issuance of a building permit and the start of construction in the next few years.

“We were very pleasantly surprised by the number and quality of all submitted proposals, which showed a wide range of possible solutions to the competition task. In this respect, the jury's decision-making was not an easy task at all," said Vice Dean Jan Trnka, who was a member of the jury. Besides representatives of the medical faculty, there were also experts in architectural and technical solutions on the jury.

The second place was taken by the Kuba Pilař Architects studio and third place by the Nemec Taller Architektur studio. The competition jury also awarded six other prizes. The faculty will present the results of the competition at the end of January in the form of an exhibition and a competition catalog.

The area in Vinohrady houses the Faculty Hospital Královská Vinohrady, the State Health Institute, the State Institute for Drug Control, the Institute for Postgraduate Education in Healthcare, and a secondary medical school. "The Third Faculty of Medicine collaborates with all these institutions in various areas of education, research, and medical practice," stated the faculty.
