Třeboň (Jindřichohradecko) - Třeboň will soon begin the reconstruction of the former barracks, about whose fate the city leadership has been negotiating with the opposition for several years. Today, the municipality signed a contract with a construction company and also obtained 55.5 million crowns from the Regional Operational Program (ROP) for the renovation of the barracks. This grant will facilitate and speed up the reconstruction of the premises, said Třebon mayor Jan Váňa today to ČTK.

The total reconstruction of the former barracks will cost around 90 million crowns and is expected to be completed by the end of September next year. The company Stavcent, which had the lowest bid, won among 13 participants in the tender. "Today we handed over the construction site, the work will be divided into stages. The money from the Regional Operational Program will save us a lot of trouble," summarized Váňa.
The buildings are in the shape of a U, with one wing being renovated by the city itself. This year's budget allocates more than 38 million crowns for this purpose. The entire city office, which currently operates in two buildings in the city center, the financial office, and other institutions will gain a facility in the renovated area. "The advantage will be that people will find all the offices together and will be able to park there more easily than before," Váňa explained.
The barracks are located near the historical center within the protective zone of the city’s heritage reserve. Třeboň acquired them from the army in 2003, and institutions like the police and emergency services already operate in the area. The former city leadership unsuccessfully attempted several times to sell the barracks, arguing that the costs of their renovation exceeded Třeboň's capabilities. After the elections, a decision was made to renovate the premises, and the city’s request for 60 million crowns from the EU is now successful to the maximum extent, that is 92.5 percent.
The mayor rejected the opinion that after the relocation of the city office, the square would cease to be a center of activity and become deserted. "The officials will not revitalize it, rather activities like the recent opening of a museum will benefit it more," he pointed out. According to him, the freed spaces in the monastery, which is a national cultural monument, could be well utilized by the state archive located nearby.
