Třebíč – Třebíč is completing the renovation of a windmill from the first half of the 19th century at a cost of 10.5 million crowns. Craftsmen are finishing the installation of new blades for the mill and an electric motor that will power them. The monument will be operated by the Třebíč Municipal Cultural Center, which will also ensure the installation of internal exhibitions. It is expected to open in the spring of next year, said Irini Martakidisová, spokesperson for the Třebíč city hall.

Inside the cone-shaped building, visitors will find a reminder of the tanning craft and social housing. The mill was used for grinding bark used by tanners, and later it housed municipal apartments. The renovation aims to give the interior the impression that someone has just recently left the building.

A significant change to the exterior of the building includes the new blades and the entire oak drive mechanism. The original milling mechanism has not survived. For several decades, the building had only reduced replicas of windmill blades, which the city ordered to be removed during the repair of the shingle roof of the mill three years ago.

Work on the restoration of the mill, funded in part by a five million crown subsidy, began in May and is expected to finish in mid-December. The building already has new electrical wiring, floors, and windows. The plaster has been replaced, and the staircase has been renovated. The installation of blades and the internal painting remains to be completed, Martakidisová said.

The mill building, constructed in 1836, is made of stone and brick masonry. Since 1958, the mill has been classified as a technical monument. The tower has a diameter of eight meters and is in the shape of a truncated cone. Its current appearance is not original but corresponds to the form from the 19th century. It has had a numbered address since 1890 and was already listed as housing for workers at that time. When the city acquired it in 1929, it was converted into apartments. There were three apartments, one on each floor. People lived there until 1977. After that, the city hall decided to renovate the mill and installed propellers, known as blades. Since then, the mill has gradually deteriorated and has not been in use.
