The circle closes After nearly 100 years since the Bauhaus school was founded in Weimar, the German government has decided to support the creation of a new museum building that will commemorate the history of this exceptional movement and will also serve as an impulse to continue this tradition. The school project is based on an international architectural competition.
Bauhaus is a landmark! Unfinished pre-war urbanism, horizontal buildings, and vast areas of Hitler's planning, historic museum buildings, a modern conference center, extensive park with a water surface used for holding concerts. The Bauhaus Museum is to have significant importance. It must become a landmark. Weimar lacks a landmark. After all, the Bauhaus is a landmark!
Concept The museum plate is oriented to disrupt the surrounding north-south scheme. I build on Bauhaus work with layering volumes and lines in space. Inside the slender plate in a strict orthogonal grid, I create solidity and void. Full volumes and lines are projected into a Mondrian-inspired façade that turns toward the city.
Exhibition A continuous journey through the space via walkways and staircases through the solid exhibition halls. Views within the empty space, glimpses through the gaps in the façade onto the park and city. The journey ends on the roof with a café and an open space to the sky, suitable for regular meetings over a glass of wine.
Operation The walkways and staircases form a single path. A slit along the entire length of the northern façade contains all the facilities and services, including fast escape staircases and elevators.
Façade It is made up of concrete panels. The joints around the solid volumes allow light to enter the empty interior space during the day and shine into the panorama of Weimar at night.
