Prague – Ten construction projects received the Building of the Year 2021 award. Among the new buildings is, for example, the exhibition space and depot for the historic railway car Slovenská strela in Kopřivnice, and among the renovations, the restoration of the oldest Czech Marian pilgrimage site in Stará Boleslav - Mariánská zóna. The results of the 29th edition were announced this evening by the Foundation for the Development of Architecture and Construction, which organizes the competition.

This year's 29th edition of the competition received a record 90 entries, six more than last year. The expert jury nominated 33 of them. The jury mostly awarded the title Building of the Year to five buildings. There were six three times, last year due to the high number of applicants eight and this year ten.

Among the awarded new buildings are the municipal swimming hall in Louny, resembling a slanted black crystal, and the Church of Christ the Savior and community center in Prague’s Barrandov, which the jury praised for its architectural purity and ability to embody the traditional understanding of a church in modern simplicity. The logistics center of Lidl in Buštěhrad was also awarded, where the jury highlighted the implementation on a brownfield site and maximum reuse of recycled materials, as well as the Villa Inner Landscape in Nový Jičín.

Among the five awarded renovations are also the Palace of Electric Enterprises on Bubenská Street in Prague, which has been restored to its original form, and the building at Hybernská 1 with office and commercial spaces, where the preservation of the protected historical part of the building was also restored. The title was given for the accessibility of the palace at Helfštýn Castle, where the jury especially highlighted the implementation of a new model approach to the reconstruction of similar buildings. The Building of the Year 2021 was also awarded for the reconstruction of the sewer collector in Nad Novou Libní Street in Prague 8 for the unique technical method of connecting sewerage lines with a special circular drop shaft with a spiral chute for wastewater, which the jury considered to be a unique and environmentally friendly construction-technical solution. The foreign building of the year 2021 is the Royal Grammar School Guildford in Dubai.

The public prize was awarded to the local Aviary La Pampa in Ostrava Zoo and the foreign construction of the Fv. 714 "Astfjordkryssinga" road, including the Slordal and Mjones tunnels in Norway. In the public prize, a total of 107,731 votes were cast, about 70,000 fewer than last year. The personalities of construction this year are Petr Čížek, long-time chairman of the Road Association, and Jiří Stráský, the author of many awarded bridge structures.
