Tachov - The thirteen-thousand-strong town of Tachov will build a twenty-five meter high lookout tower next year for about ten million crowns. The city will obtain approximately nine million crowns from the European program ROP Southwest. This will be the largest investment for Tachov in 2014. The viewpoint on the highest neighboring hill, Vysoká, will be open to the public by August next year at the latest, said Mayor Ladislav Macák (ČSSD) to ČTK.
The city wants to start construction by the end of the year, but due to complications with the selection process, building is likely to start in the spring. "They have informed us that we will receive the subsidy," he stated. Tachov will sign the contract for it only after selecting a specific construction supplier, which will be made of galvanized steel to prevent vandalism.
The lookout tower on the highest neighboring hill, Vysoká, will be unstaffed, permanently accessible, and free; it will be monitored by cameras. "On the roof, there will be a webcam showing the weather in the surrounding area. People can check online on the city's website what the current view is," the mayor stated. From the tower, it will be possible to see as far as Germany and all the hills of the Czech Forest.
The town hall will also use its funds to renovate the vicinity of the memorial for the Hussite battle near Tachov in 1427. "We have already removed all the old pavement there and are preparing an educational trail around the artificial cave of Lourdes. Furthermore, we want to restore the foundations of the pilgrimage church. A walking route of approximately three kilometers with information boards will lead to Svatá (the riding hall of Světce, a national cultural monument)," the mayor stated. According to him, the modifications of the surroundings and the trail will cost about one million crowns. "I’m not claiming that it will be completely successful next year. We did not receive a subsidy for the trail," he said.
The fourth largest city in the Plzeň region currently lacks a tourist lookout tower, and both locals and visitors want one. The only lookout tower in the area is an older masonry viewpoint in Planá, 15 kilometers from Tachov.
There are 41 lookout towers and viewing platforms in the Plzeň region.
