Tábor - This year, Tábor will repair the fountain in Žižkov Square. The reconstruction will begin in April and finish in August. During this time, the fountain will be largely covered, and the water will be drained from it. The estimated cost of repairing the 16th-century fountain is approximately 1.5 million crowns. Tábor's deputy mayor, Radoslav Kacerovský (Tábor 2020), said this to reporters today.

"When you look closely at the fountain, you can clearly see that it is not in ideal condition. The problem is not just with the fountain itself, but the statue in its center is similarly affected. In 2019, we commissioned a restoration survey, which we updated last year, and it showed us all these deficiencies. We will see what price we get through the bidding process, because not just any company can do the work; it must have the proper qualifications. Moreover, all interventions must be consulted with preservationists," said Kacerovský.

The fountain was created in the mid-16th century by Ondřej from Sušice, who used stone from the Dobrá Voda rock near Pelhřimov for its construction. The statue in the center of the fountain features a figure holding a banner. According to historians, it symbolizes the emblem of the self-governing city and its right of life and death. The last reconstruction of the fountain took place in 1996, when the main reason was the poor condition of the statue. The city council then decided to have a copy of the original work made. The new statue was crafted by sculptor Václav Dušek, and the original piece was stored by the town hall in a depository.

"We will see if we can implement some kind of commemoration of this year's anniversary of Jan Žižka's death at the fountain. However, everything depends on the negotiations with the preservationists," Kacerovský stated. This autumn marks the 600th anniversary of Jan Žižka's death. The town hall wants to dedicate, among other things, the biggest city celebration, which is the Táborská setkání, held in September, to this theme. "By that time, the fountain must, of course, be repaired," said the deputy mayor of Tábor.
