Prague - The radio station Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) did not select any of the eighty proposals for the monument it wanted to build in front of its new headquarters in Prague at Hagibor. Last summer, it announced a competition for the Memorial of Freedom. The announcement stated that results would be announced in September 2007. However, representatives of the radio are currently informing the competition participants via email that no proposal was selected. One of them, Prague sculptor Vojtěch Míča, informed ČTK about this today. The decision of the radio, which is in possession of ČTK, was sent to the artists by RFE/RL project manager Nick Kavelakis. According to him, RFE/RL selected several proposals from the 80 submitted that could become the freedom monument. But "there was a feeling that input and recommendations were needed from artistic experts and other specialists who are not part of RFE/RL. Therefore, we assembled an international jury of experts, and this jury assisted RFE/RL in deciding on the final form of the freedom monument," the manager stated. The jury evaluated 13 proposals, all of which were "exceptional and appreciated their original approach." In the end, the jury decided to accept none of the 13 selected proposals and to postpone the entire project to a later date, most likely to 2009, Kavelakis stated.
