Brno - Brno should restore the role of chief architect. This was stated today by the mayoral candidate Irena Matonohová (Mayors and Independents) to journalists. According to her, the city needs a top architect to systematically shape the city's face and work on specific urban projects that he can defend before the citizens. Currently, the city is facing problems with parking, it is poorly passable, and the city hall is stuck in place regarding the reconstruction of the railway hub, she added.

"The office of the chief architect was senselessly abolished by the ruling ODS eleven years ago. It was imprudent and hasty. We are constantly dealing with the consequences of this step," stated Matonohová, who is currently a member of Brno's council. According to her, Brno lacks an overall concept and effort to support a certain character of the city, leading to very debatable and insensitive buildings for the surroundings.
"The idea that a politician or an official without urban planning or architectural education can decide about the appearance and development of Brno is wrong. It is evident that Brno needs a top architect who would create a vision for the city's development. He should be independent of politicians and have strong powers with the possibility of issuing territorial decisions," said the mayoral candidate.
According to her, the new city leadership should establish the institution as quickly as possible after the elections. "The office of the architect with the chief architect and his team would allow for the construction of modern buildings that would not disturb the overall character of the city, which is a functionalist gem," added Matonohová.
