Brno - Walls and shelves made of thousands of beech beams, resembling a wooden construction set, have risen in the Museum of Applied Arts in Brno. In the newly subdivided space, the curators are installing 300 competition exhibits submitted by artists from around the world for the International Biennale of Graphic Design Brno 2012. The biennale will start on June 21 and last until October, as reported by ČTK from the organizers of the Moravian Gallery in Brno. The theme and unifying idea of this year's biennale is the process in all meanings of the word, which also inspired the creators of the architectural solution. After the exhibition ends, craftsmen will disassemble the walls again and return the beams for further use to the furniture manufacturers that lent them to Brno. "The exhibition consists of walls, pedestals, and shelves reminiscent of the boundaries of drying wood. Individual objects are then freely installed using a hanging metal program on shelves or magnets. An important part of the exhibition's architecture was the subdivision of the space into more intimate corners, where visitors can find peace to study the exhibits," described the intention of the architect Anna Kozová. According to the curator of the competitive exhibition, Marta Sylvestrová, the ecological character and playfulness of the architectural solution are its benefits. The wooden structure, according to her, resembles Japanese architecture. The architects also aligned their solution with the overall artistic concept of the biennale, which was designed this time by Adéla Svobodová, Pauline Kerlerouxová, and Tereza Hejmová. The visual style of the biennale is among the prestigious commissions. "The individual biennale print materials - from invitations to catalogs to this year's premiere newspapers - have a report-like character, which attracts visitors with visual diversity. The invitation, humorously translated, recalls the Japanese origami folding," stated Sylvestrová. This year, the biennale newspapers will inform about the events at the exhibition. The competitive exhibition is the main, but not the only exhibition of the biennale. This year, the showcase will also offer an exhibition Work from California, a look back at the Amsterdam Provo movement, and a selection of artist books and paper book objects by Kveta Pacovska. More information can be found by interested parties on the biennale website.
