Private Eko Gymnasium Brno is completing the construction of a new school

Brno – The Private Eco Gymnasium Brno is completing the construction of a new school building, which it will move into starting in September. Thanks to this, it will be able to gradually increase its capacity to up to 360 places, which is 80 more than it currently has. It will be able to accept more students into the four-year program since currently, 90 percent of students are in the multi-year program, said the chairwoman of the school’s board Sylvie Schmiedová to journalists during a tour of the nearly finished building in Nový Lískovec.

This is the first new school building "on green field" in Brno in many years, as most new capacities are extensions. It is located on a site where garages began to be built a quarter-century ago, but the investor abandoned the project due to financial problems, and the local district sought a partner to complete the work. It gradually became clear that there was not such a need for so many garages on Jihlavská Street on the edge of the housing estate, and it finally turned out that a private school could be established here. "We welcomed this; it will be the second high school in our district,” said Mayor Jana Drápalová (Greens).

For the gymnasium, which was established 32 years ago, this was a welcome help since it has so far been renting part of a primary school building on Labská Street in nearby Starý Lískovec. "But in 2022, we were told that we would no longer be able to use that part," said Schmiedová. The local district reacted to this by saying it would need to increase capacities for its catchment area students. "We have been looking for new spaces for several years, as there are significantly more applicants for study than we can accept. This year, thanks to the move, we were able to accept 50 more applicants," said Schmiedová. As a result, one new class will be opened for both the multi-year and four-year programs.

The construction is designed according to modern trends. It is equipped with a heat pump, temperature can be regulated in different parts of the building, there are photovoltaic panels on the roof, the walls will be green, and since the school is located by the busy Jihlavská Street, it has special soundproof windows. Ventilation is provided through recuperation. At the same time, it creates a noise barrier for the neighboring housing estate.

The school does not have a gymnasium or playground. It will use the gymnasium at the nearby Kamínky Primary School, and there is a playground in front of the school. "It is currently quite neglected, but we plan to revitalize it so it can serve the school and the locals in the afternoon," said Drápalová.
