Brno - A statue of the poet and writer Jan Skácel will be created in Brno according to the design by academic sculptor Jiří Sobotka, who won the artistic competition for the statue's representation. The stylized portrait of Skácel will be made using layered and welded stainless steel tubes for nearly three million, said Klára Liptáková (KDU-ČSL), the mayor's deputy, to ČTK today. According to her, this will allow people to view Brno through Skácel's eyes. The statue, which will be located on the southern side of the park under Špilberk Castle, is expected to be completed next year.

Sobotka's winning design is strongly influenced by the aesthetics of 3D modeling. This form utilizes the method of gradual layering of materials. "The statue will be in a place with a beautiful view. Skácel will thus gaze from the park under Špilberk over the entire city. The point is that people can look at Brno through the poet's perspective via the individual tubes," Liptáková stated.
A total of 44 designs for the statue were submitted to the competition. They were judged by a panel that included Liptáková, Mayor Petr Vokřál (ANO), as well as experts like Karel Havliš from the Faculty of Architecture at VUT in Brno, Jana Kořínková from the Faculty of Fine Arts at VUT in Brno, the head of the Department of Art Education at Masaryk University’s Faculty of Education Radek Horáček, director of the Moravian Gallery in Brno Jan Press, and others. "We had to dismiss two designs. From the rest, we selected the winner and second and third places," Liptáková said.
The first three designs will receive financial awards. Sobotka will receive 100,000 crowns for his victory, second place Tomáš Medek will get 60,000 crowns, and the third pair Stefan Milkov and Jiří Trojan will share 30,000 crowns.
Writer Jan Skácel was born on February 7, 1922, in Vnorovy in the Hodonín region. He wrote poetry and prose and engaged in creating works for children. His works include poetry collections such as Dávné proso, Naděje s bukovými křídly, Odlévání do ztraceného vosku, or Smuténka. His works express a strong connection to Moravia. He died in Brno on November 7, 1989.
