Prague – Social events can take place at the Šlechtova Restaurant in Prague's Stromovka, as the reconstruction of the restaurant's main hall has been completed. The restaurant's gastronomic facilities still need to be finished, and the adjacent chestnut alley will be restored, where trees will be planted, and an outdoor restaurant will be created. This was announced today by Prague councilor Hana Třeštíková (Prague Together) and deputy mayor of Prague 7 Lenka Burgerová (Prague 7 Together). The renovation of the restaurant began in 2017, with the original completion date set for April 2019.
A temporary stall was opened last year next to the restaurant, which will be dismantled after the facilities are completed. The renovation of Šlechtova Restaurant will cost the city 290 million CZK, and the municipal company Obecní dům will manage the monument.
"Today we symbolically open the cultural part of Šlechtova Restaurant. Any ceremony, such as weddings, graduations, celebrations, or smaller concerts, can take place here. At the same time, the second phase will be completed, which is the establishment for gastronomy, and we hope that will be done by next summer," said Třeštíková.
In this phase of renovations, the reconstruction of the baroque hall was completed, where the stucco decoration was restored, and new paintings were made, as well as repairs to the arcade on the ground floor and the grotto. A new stone fountain was designed according to historical patterns.
In addition to the gastronomic operation, the city will restore the chestnut alley next to the historic building. Chestnut trees that once grew here will be planted, and underneath them, an outdoor restaurant will be established with facilities. "At the moment, the selection of the contractor is ongoing. Trees can be planted only in two periods, in the fall or in the spring. As soon as the contractor is selected, it will be possible to plant the chestnut tree, and it will be coordinated with the second phase of construction, so it will be carried out," said Burgerová. When exactly the chestnut alley will be finished is not clear.
Last July, the renovation of the area in front of the historic building was completed. Craftsmen restored the flower beds and lawn, constructed an automatic irrigation system, and drained and reconstructed the gravel and asphalt surfaces. New benches, bins, and lighting were added.
The Šlechtova Restaurant building was created in the 17th century as a baroque summer palace. A restaurant has been here since the 19th century, most recently run by Antonín Šlechta, under whom it operated until World War II. It was subsequently nationalized.
The site is now a national cultural monument, owned by the capital city. The building had long been neglected. Prague handed the building for complete reconstruction to a selected contractor in 2017.
