Prague - The winners of the Building of the Year 2016 competition will be announced today at the Bethlehem Chapel in Prague. A total of 15 buildings are competing for six titles in the 24th edition, including the "Path in the Clouds" in Lower Moravia, the digital planetarium in Hradec Králové, the modernization of the track from Tábor to Sudoměřice, the Natura Park center in Pardubice, and the Blanka tunnel in Prague. The competition is organized by the Foundation for the Development of Architecture and Construction.
Titles can be awarded to new and reconstructed buildings, urban implementations of public spaces, landscape modifications, ground residential and non-residential buildings, transport and engineering constructions, and specific building works. A condition for registering for the competition was the completion and commissioning or occupancy permit from June 2015 to the end of this May. Usually, the jury selects five buildings; according to the competition manager Petra Miškejová, this time there will be six for the second time in history.
This year, there were 65 applications submitted, from which the jury selected 15 finalists. The jury will also choose the winner of the Foreign Building of the Year category. Buildings constructed abroad by Czech companies can apply for the title. Other categories include Urban Project and Public Prize.
Last year's buildings of the year were the Komenský Bridge in Jaroměř, the completion of the elementary school in Dobřichovice, the underground complex at Old Town Square in Mladá Boleslav, the extension of the Bolt Tower blast furnace in Ostrava, and the renovation of buildings in the Hlubina Mine area there.
