Bystřice pod Hostýnem - Craftsmen are currently completing the first phase of the reconstruction of Masaryk Square in Bystřice pod Hostýnem in the Kroměříž region. The crumbling concrete paving in front of the town hall has been replaced with more durable granite, and the work also includes the restoration of the fountain and public lighting. New benches, bike racks, trash cans, and a drinking fountain will be added to the square, along with changes to the greenery. Most of the work is expected to be finished by the end of August, mayor Zdeněk Pánek told ČTK today.
The costs of the modifications to the central square of Bystřice amount to approximately 22.2 million crowns. "The reconstruction is proceeding according to schedule. The square is essentially finished. The only thing that will not be completed in the next 14 days is the planting of greenery, because of course we all know how dry it is outside," said the mayor.
The planned planting of greenery has been postponed to the fall. Artistic work on the sandstone fountain is also yet to be completed. The bronze statue of the Virgin Mary of Victory protecting Moravia, which is part of the fountain, is currently being restored by its author, Daniel Ignác Trubač, in his studio. He will also work on some stone elements of the fountain.
The city is planning a second phase of the reconstruction of Masaryk Square. It is mainly preparing the restoration of green areas and paving around St. Giles Church and the nearby elementary and art schools. "There should be a park-like area designated for relaxation. The currently reconstructed part of the square serves as a gathering place for organizing club events, various festivals, and the like," said Pánek.
The estimated costs for the second phase of the square's reconstruction are around 20 million crowns according to the mayor. Whether and when the modifications will take place will be decided by the new municipal council that will emerge from the September municipal elections. Approximately 8,000 people live in the city.
