Prague - The reconstruction of the Libeň Bridge in Prague will begin this year on September 20. Following preparatory work, the construction of a flushing channel and the relocation of utilities will take place. According to the schedule, work on the main bridge over the Vltava River is set to start in 2024. This was stated today by the mayor's deputy Adam Scheinherr. The project does not only account for the reconstruction of part of the bridge over the river but also for a complete transformation of the bridge complex and its surroundings, including the construction of flood protection measures. The repair, along with other works, will cost approximately 2.18 billion crowns.
The Libeň Bridge is a structure consisting of six bridges and was built according to the design of architect Pavel Janák in 1928. The bridge has never been repaired and is in very poor condition. The consortium of companies responsible for the bridge repair is led by the company Metrostav TBR, which also includes its parent company Metrostav and design firms SATRA and SHP.
Next Tuesday, the city will hand over the construction site to the contractor, who will begin bringing in equipment. "The first phase will begin, which will last until 2024, during which preparatory work will be done, and a flushing channel will be built, among other things. In the coming year, there will be relocations of utilities, and a temporary bridge will be created," said Scheinherr.
The main phase of repairs, during which the main bridge over the Vltava will be reconstructed, will begin in 2024. Traffic will be interrupted during the repairs.
The builders will repair and modify the entire bridge complex from the intersection with Dělnická and Jankovcova streets to Palmova, covering a distance of 1200 meters. They will also work on restoring the buried Vltava arm and building bike paths or barrier-free access to the bridge from Rohanský Island, which will be transformed into a recreational area in the future. The appearance of the bridge over the river will not change after the repairs.
The Libeň Bridge is a structure consisting of six bridges. TSK and the city chose a method in which one company will provide the design and also carry out the work.
The bridge is in critical condition. In 2018, it was temporarily closed to cars and public transportation due to this condition. Last year, diagnostics showed that all arches had the same load-bearing capacity as at the time of construction. The previous leadership of Prague planned to demolish the bridge and replace it with a new structure, but the current leadership of the municipality decided to proceed with the repair.
