PRAGUE - An exhibition about Prague's cemeteries and burial sites, which will be accessible starting Wednesday at the Old Town Hall, brings closer the places of eternal rest from architectural, urban, historical, and cultural perspectives. It attempts to summarize archaeological findings about burial sites and provides an image of both existing and abolished cemeteries throughout Prague. Several tangible exhibits recall the level of funerary art and types of burial rituals, the press department of the city hall informed ČTK.
The exhibition titled Prague Burial Sites and Cemeteries as Part of Historical and Cultural Heritage and Urban Greenery was prepared by the Development Department of the Capital City of Prague in collaboration with the National Heritage Institute and many other institutions. The exhibition will be open to the public in the Architects' Hall on the fourth floor of the Old Town Hall from Wednesday until February 26 of next year. Entrance is free.
There are nearly seventy functioning cemeteries in Prague. Many of them feature significant works by Czech sculptors, buildings designed by renowned architects, and graves of notable personalities. The cemeteries in the metropolis, both urban and simple, which still retain a rural character, are regarded as a cultural and historical treasure. They reflect the life of Prague residents and speak to the cultural maturity of the nation. They are also extensive parks, rich in greenery and flowers, as well as important monuments and significant reminders of great figures in Czech history and culture.
Visitors to the exhibition will find information about specific cemeteries - evangelical, Jewish, plague, hospital, and prehistoric burial sites in Prague. The exhibition also presents significant discoveries brought by archaeology in the last fifteen years.
