Prague - The city council of the second district is considering building underground garages at Karlovo náměstí (Karlovo Square). By the end of the year, they want to complete a study that will show whether it is possible, for example, from the perspective of heritage protection. They will pay about 100,000 crowns for it, the mayor Jana Černochová told reporters today.

"Karlovo náměstí seems suitable to us given its location in the city center," said Černochová. The garages are expected to be located in the area of the former Jesuit college, in front of the Church of Saint Ignatius. "The park will remain untouched," added councilor Karel Chramosil.
"We are working on identifying locations for the placement of underground garages," said Černochová. "We are aware that the introduction of paid parking zones will increase the demand for parking in Prague 2 from both the business sector and residents," added the mayor.
Karlovo náměstí is not the only area where the city council would like to build underground parking. At Jiráskově náměstí, an investor of the Dancing House has committed to building garages, according to the council. In the future, there could be parking for about 300 cars at that location. At Karlovo and Tylovo náměstí, it would be 50 less. Another option is Ostrčilovo náměstí. However, the council is also considering above-ground garages there, which would be supported by the pillars of the Nuselský bridge. The last option is a small area on Americká Street above Náměstí Míru (Peace Square).
"We definitely wouldn't want to act as investors or operators when building the garages," previously stated the deputy mayor Jiří Paluska. The city council only wants to prepare the space for private investors.
The city council of Prague 3 is also considering building underground parking. In the future, drivers could park under Ondříčkova Street, Jiří z Poděbrad Square, or Škroupovo náměstí. Residents, however, fear an increase in traffic and noise near the parking lots.
