Brno - The city hall in the Brno-Židenice district wants to renovate the funeral hall, which has been closed for seven years due to its poor condition. Although it belongs to the municipality, the district that has it on its territory will try to take it under its care, said Deputy Mayor Petr Kunc (TOP 09) to reporters today. According to him, the renovation could cost around 16 million crowns and could be completed in two to three years. The district, together with the municipality, has prepared an application for a grant for the reconstruction from the Operational Program Environment.
The city wanted to demolish the funeral hall. "Fortunately, no money was found in the then budget," Kunc stated. "The building looks bleak from the outside, as thieves stole various metal items and sheets, causing leaks, but the interior is not in bad condition," he added. He believes that the structure cannot be unstable since there are no cracks on any of the glass surfaces of the hall.
The deputy mayor reminded that funeral services are also held in Líšeň, where the cemetery is small, but mainly at the Central Cemetery in Brno, which is on the opposite side from Židenice. "Ceremonies there take place every twenty minutes. Therefore, our funeral hall should be preserved and put back into operation. It is well located in the city and is at the second largest cemetery, which has a parking lot with almost 200 spaces," said Kunc.
According to him, it is still unclear how much the renovation will cost. "The optimistic option talks about 12 million, while the probably unrealistic option is 32 million. The last survey showed that the price could be around 16 million crowns," he said.
The new leadership of the municipality, led by Deputy Mayor Martin Ander (SZ), also wants to participate in saving the hall. "Without his help and the support of the director of the Cemetery Administration of the city of Brno, Marek Šamšula, the rescue would not be possible," Kunc added.
