Lednice (Břeclavsko) - Next year, the long-delayed extensive repairs to the facade of the castle in Lednice in Břeclav will begin. The cost will be approximately 200 million crowns. It will be one of the largest construction projects concerning Czech monuments. The company that will restore the facade will be selected by February of next year, said Petr Kroupa, director of South Moravian heritage protectors, today. Lednice Castle is the third most visited monument in the Czech Republic after Prague Castle and the monuments in Český Krumlov.
The castle has been waiting for facade restoration for many years. Before the craftsmen start, the roofs of the castle need to be repaired, which will cost nearly 19 million crowns. The work is expected to be completed next year. It includes not only the replacement of tiles but also the repair of roof beams.
In the past, a company had already been selected to deal with the facade repairs. In the end, the project was halted. The reason was supposedly the excessively high prices set by the contractor. Therefore, this year heritage protectors selected a company to carry out a tender for a new supplier. This approach is intended to ensure transparency throughout the process.
"The work on the facade restoration will be demanding and will be spread over several phases. How long the reconstruction will take will depend on how the funds are released for the project," added Kroupa. The modifications will take place while the facility is in operation.
Lednice Castle has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997. The building is one of the historical architectural gems of Central Europe. The massive structure is set in a landscape designed in the style of an English park. Other monuments adjoin the castle. Approximately half a million tourists visit the castle and its immediate surroundings each year.
