Ostrava - The Mayor of Ostrava, Tomáš Macura (ANO), today criticized the central city district of Moravská Ostrava and Přívoz for how it decided on the creation of a statue of the late singer Věra Špinarová. The fact that the work was commissioned to a specific artist without a competition bothers representatives of the cultural life in the city. Macura considers their objections to be justified. The portrayal of the beloved singer has also sparked criticism among the public. They point out that the statue does not reflect Špinarová's likeness, and a petition has already been started for its removal.

Regarding the statue's likeness, which the singer's family is also dissatisfied with, the mayor did not want to comment. According to him, it is a subjective opinion and critical voices in this regard cannot be preempted even by a competition. "Another issue is the way these contracts are assigned, which I consider bad," said Macura. "In this particular case, I also consider it wrong that there was no proper communication with the family. If the closest family says they do not like it and disagree, that is actually the worst thing that could happen," stated Macura.

The district contacted David Moješčík to create the statue, known for works such as "Levitation" at the train station in Ostrava-Svinov or the Memorial of Operation Anthropoid in Prague. "In 2017, he created a statue of Leoš Janáček for our district, which is located at Jiráskův Square and we really like it. Therefore, we also approached Mr. Moješčík for this new project," said district spokeswoman Jana Pondělíčková. Moješčík also created a statue of Karel Kryl at the radio building in the district, which, according to the spokeswoman, was not funded by the district budget.

The mayor stated that the city plans to establish an office for the city architect, similar to the Institute of Planning and Development of the Capital City of Prague, which should help address the shape of public space in the city.

"This particular case shows that something like this is missing here,"
believes Macura. According to him, the district should consider whether the situation can still be resolved.

"I saw the work only when it was finished, and personally I can imagine that it could be more realistic, I would prefer a different hairstyle that is more typical for her, however, I do see it in certain details," said mayor Petra Bernfeldová (Ostravak movement). The spokeswoman reminded that in the assignment, the district did not require a completely realistic likeness.

The author stated at the unveiling of the statue that he stands by his portrayal of the singer and that it is not a specific Věra Špinarová from a particular time period, but rather the essence of the singer's likeness.
