Prague - The planned reconstruction of the building at the corner of Wenceslas Square and Opletalova Street has encountered further issues. The Prague 1 council has suspended the enforcement of a resolution passed by the previous leadership of the municipal district. On November 9, just before the end of its term, the previous administration approved the new building. According to Mayor Oldřich Lomecký (TOP 09), they did not have all the necessary documents at their disposal. Lomecký stated this to ČTK today.
A number of experts have expressed their opposition to the new building. They are unhappy that it would require the demolition of a structure they consider architecturally valuable. However, the demolition was agreed upon by the preservationists of the Prague city council. Last week, the Ministry of Culture’s heritage inspection already opposed the decision, stating that it was issued in violation of the law. The city council's position should now be addressed by the heritage care department of the ministry.
"Such a large project needs to be widely discussed, both with the residents and experts,” stated Lomecký. He wants the issue to be addressed by the territorial development committee and for the investor to present a detailed work plan to the city council.
According to Lomecký, the investor, which is the company Václavské náměstí 19 a.s., proposes a new building in the shape of an L, which would surround part of the remaining courtyard section of the Jalta hotel. The building is supposed to have nine above-ground and three underground floors and would form a fully glazed unified corner of Wenceslas Square and Opletalova Street. It would include residential areas and office spaces, as well as underground garages.
The potential demolition of the current building at the corner is not favored by the Club for Old Prague. According to them, it is undamaged and architecturally valuable.
