Přerov, October 29 (ČTK) - The banks of the Bečva River in the center of Přerov will be connected in the future by a new Tyrš Bridge. The Přerov city council today approved its construction after many years. However, this was preceded by a debate lasting more than an hour. The bridge, which will be accessible to vehicles, will replace the current pedestrian bridge, which is in a deplorable condition. According to estimates, the construction of the bridge is expected to cost between 60 million and 70 million crowns. "Councilors today approved the development of project documentation for the new Tyrš Bridge with the possibility of introducing one-way traffic in the coming years towards the center," said Bohuslav Přidal, spokesman for the Přerov city hall, to ČTK. The bridge is to be designed in such a way that it will not be damaged by floods, which catastrophically affected the city in 1997. Therefore, the bridge will have narrowed pillars. Designers must also ensure that there is an option to allow vehicles to cross the bridge in both directions in exceptional cases. "The project must be prepared in terms of capacity and feasibility for this variant, should it be found, for example, that the traffic situation in the city is untenable," added Přidal. The councilors began discussing the construction of the bridge back in mid-September, but the discussions ended in a stalemate. Also today, the opposition councilors were against it. For example, there were proposals for experts to produce a replica of the bridge. However, this was ultimately rejected. The construction of a new bridge has been discussed in Přerov for several years. In 2003, the city hall announced an architectural-urban competition, in which a cable-stayed bridge design won. However, this proposal was not supported by residents in a public survey, nor by heritage conservationists and ornithologists. Environmentalists pointed out that the cables would become a deadly trap for the birds living near the Bečva River. According to Přidal, the city should know the exact investment only after the project documentation is prepared. The city hall plans to obtain funding for the investment, for example, from European grants. > Přerov may begin construction of the Tyrš Bridge next year [26.8.2007] > After years of preparation, Přerov is likely to start constructing the new Tyrš Bridge [20.1.2006] > Moravian ornithologists are opposed to the construction of the cable-stayed Tyrš Bridge [27.2.2006]
