Prague – Reconstruction of the sidewalks and roads in front of the General University Hospital on Karlovo náměstí in Prague will begin on March 23. The reconstruction is part of the repairs of Karlovo náměstí and its surroundings, which will be carried out by the Technical Road Administration (TSK). The aim is to improve conditions for pedestrians and increase safety. This was announced by TSK spokesperson Barbora Lišková. Traffic will be partially maintained.
On the square in the streets U Nemocnice and Vyšehradská, the lanes will be widened, which will have a new bituminous surface. A lane for cyclists will be added. Parking spaces with stone paving will also be modified. The sidewalks will be newly made of small stone mosaics, while there will temporarily be an asphalt surface near the park, due to the planned modification of the entire park. The work follows adjustments that were made around the square in previous years.
From March 23 to April 16, the sidewalk in front of the hospital will be closed, followed by the sidewalks near the park being inaccessible from April 17 to May 8. From May 9, half of the road adjacent to the park will be closed until May 28. Subsequently, from May 29, half of the roadway adjacent to the hospital will be closed until June 11.
In the past, the surfaces and traffic lights in Karlovo náměstí were repaired, and sidewalks for pedestrians were added. TSK also built ten barrier-free pedestrian crossings in recent years, equipped with tactile warning strips. The corners of intersections were widened, reducing the length of selected crossings or modifying the width of lanes.
A separate project is the modification of the park in the center of the square, which is being prepared by the city council. The city selected architectural studios through a competitive dialogue that created the reconstruction project.
Karlovo náměstí, formerly known as Dobytčí trh, is the largest square in the Czech Republic, covering an area of 80,550 square meters, and one of the largest in Europe. It measures 510 meters in length and 130 meters in width.
