Prague - One of the pioneers of Cubism not only in Czech sculpture was Otto Gutfreund. He was born on August 3, 1889, in Dvůr Králové nad Labem, graduated from a specialized ceramic school in Bechyně, then studied in Prague at the Arts and Crafts School, and like most artists of his time, he also studied and drew inspiration in Paris.
His most famous works include sculptures such as Don Quijote, Hamlet, or Reclining Woman, and he is also the author of the group monument to Grandmother Božena Němcová in Ratibořice Valley, the monumental relief Return of the Legions for the Legiobanka in Prague Na Poříčí, or the memorial to T. G. Masaryk in Hradec Králové. He tragically died at the age of 37 - on June 2, 1927, he drowned while swimming in the Vltava River in Prague. Less than a year before his death, he was appointed professor at the Arts and Crafts School in Prague, specializing in decorative sculpture.
