Antonín Tenzer

Prague - Architect Antonín Tenzer, whose birth was exactly one hundred years ago on December 22, is one of the leading representatives of Czech high functionalism. He came from Kašperské Hory and graduated in architecture from the Prague School of Applied Arts, where he was a student of Pavel Janák. Throughout his studies, he also worked in the studio of Jaromír Krejcar.
As an author or co-author, he is credited with a number of remarkable buildings. These include, for example, the sanatorium in Vráž near Písek, a healthcare center in Prague-Vysočany, a children's hospital in Prague-Motol, a sanatorium in Jáchymov, and terrace houses in Prague-Libeň. However, his probably most famous building is located right in the center of Prague, at Wenceslas Square. It is the Jalta Hotel, which was built on the site of a building that was bombed in 1945 and is considered the most successful building of the socialist realism period.
Antonín Tenzer was also a longtime member and later an official of the SVU Mánes, and his enthusiasm for work and life optimism did not leave him until almost his death. He passed away just shy of 94 years on October 12, 2002, three years after he was awarded a lifetime achievement award by the Czech Architects' Association.
