Prazdroj will fundamentally transform the brewery courtyard and open up even more to the public

Plzeň - Pilsner Urquell will fundamentally transform the brewery courtyard in Plzeň and open up even more to the public. A relaxation zone with steps by the Radbuza River will be created there. The ongoing reconstruction of the garages next to the visitor center will expand the space inside the brewery area. It will bring new opportunities for cultural and social events. CTK was informed of this today by the brewery spokesman Zdeněk Kovář.

"For a long time, we have been trying to make as many spaces in the brewery accessible to the people of Plzeň and visitors to the city as possible. Thanks to the planned adjustments in the courtyard, access to the Radbuza River will open from the side of Prazdroj upon completion, increasing the space for events in the courtyard and expanding the relaxation zone. We also plan to plant 30 new trees," said tourism manager Rudolf Šlehofer.

The demolition of the garages, over which a footbridge now leads from Štruncovy Sady, will begin in November. "The new garages will be positioned lower, and their walkable roof will be at the level of the brewery courtyard. This will significantly increase its area and create another public space with a view of the Radbuza," Kovář stated. A wide staircase with seating will lead to the river. The connection between the brewery and Štruncovy Sady across the river towards the football stadium will remain a pedestrian bridge, which will undergo a complete reconstruction and be redesigned.

According to Šlehofer, the brewery is consulting the project modifications with the city to ensure that they mainly benefit the residents. "Thanks to the modifications and the removal of part of the fence around the brewery, Prazdroj will open up even more towards the city center. This will create a new place for walks by the river," he added.

The completion of the construction work is expected in 2026. From October 8, 2024, throughout the reconstruction, the footbridge connecting Štruncovy Sady with the brewery will be closed. A part of the courtyard in the brewery will also be temporarily inaccessible; however, this will not limit the holding of public and cultural events, which will take place in the freely accessible parts of the area - such as the Summer at Prazdroj or burger festivals will be held in the spaces near Spilka and Formanka. The construction work will not disrupt the brewery's operations or the guided tours, Šlehofer added.

The design of the modified courtyard and adjacent spaces was created by the Prague studio Jakub Cigler Architekti. The brewery will select the construction contractor by spring.
