The Prague City Hall is selling land for apartment construction in the South City area of Prague 11 to Skanska. Today, Prague councilors approved the sale of more than 108,000 square meters of land in the Milíčov area for nearly 193 million crowns to Skanska. The city initially planned to collaborate with the company, which owns additional parcels there, on this project. However, the apartment construction is now purely commercial. The plans are not well-received by the civic association Hezké Jižní Město, which is concerned about, among other things, an increase in the number of cars in South City. Mayor’s assistant Jan Bürgermeister (ODS) stated that the project raises concerns among local residents. However, Skanska has committed to expanding the access road and ensuring that stores and services will be located on the ground floors of the buildings, he mentioned.
Some councilors criticized the city's approach. "The project will contribute to the deterioration of living conditions in South City. By selling the parcels, Prague loses influence over its further development," said Ivana Bursíková (ED). According to former mayor of Prague 11 Petr Jirava (Independent Association), the area will become another shelter. "There should be apartments of a different quality than those considered with an area of 60 square meters," he emphasized.
The councilors did not approve Jan Kasl's (ED) proposal that the city hall only sell the parcels after the construction is completed. He argued that this would allow them to retain influence over the project.
According to the association, more than 1,000 apartments are set to be built to the south of Stříbrský and Novomeský streets. The association, according to earlier statements from its representatives, would have no objections if there were fewer larger apartments. Additionally, association members believe that municipal land in South City should be developed into facilities such as care homes, spaces for social gatherings, sports facilities, and green areas.
