Prague - The leadership of the capital city will strive to have the old wastewater treatment plant on Papírenská Street in Bubenč recognized as a UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage site. The reason is its architectural and technical value. This is indicated in a document that Prague city councilors are expected to discuss on Monday. The treatment plant was put into operation in 1907.

"The old wastewater treatment plant represents an exceptional technical facility from the early 20th century. The functional unit is an extraordinary testament to the beginnings of wastewater treatment," the document states.

According to the document, the treatment plant is in good condition and shows no defects or damage and is regularly maintained. Both the above-ground and underground parts have been preserved in their original form. "A significant part of the technological equipment is in operable condition," the material states.

The city wants to have the treatment plant listed on the UNESCO registry not only for its historical and technical value but also to attract tourists. The center of Prague has long struggled with an influx of tourists, and the city leadership aims to entice them to explore areas outside the center.

The treatment plant was built between 1901 and 1906 and served for wastewater treatment in Prague until 1967. The project of the treatment plant was developed by engineer Sir William Heerlein Lindley.
