Prague - Prague 6 wants to place a monument to the Austrian monarch and Czech queen Maria Theresa on its territory. The city hall management has already announced an artistic competition for its design, said Adam Halmoši, spokesperson for Prague 6. It is to be placed in a new park at Prašný bridge between Milady Horákové Street and the bastions of Prague Castle's fortification. The city hall has also announced a competition for a sculpture of Sophie Chotek, wife of the heir to the Austrian throne Francis Ferdinand d'Este.
The monument is to be created at the site of the construction of the Blanka tunnel complex. After the work is completed, the construction site will be transformed into a park, in the center of which there will be an artwork. "In connection with the baroque fortification, a monument to the only monarch who ruled on the Czech throne, Maria Theresa, was chosen," noted the mayor of the district, Marie Kousalíková (ODS).
Prague 6 expects that the competition will result in a design for the monument, which will be a "central element of the classical solution" of the park along with a fountain. The cost of the monument must not exceed three million crowns.
The city hall of the sixth district has also announced a competition for the design of the sculpture of Chotek, who died with her husband in the assassination in Sarajevo. The work, which should include a fountain, cascade, or similar "water element," is to be located on Mariánské Hradby street among a square of trees as a "certain counterpoint and conclusion to the forefield of the Pisek Gate."
Prague 6 estimates the price of this sculpture to be up to two million crowns. It could be erected in front of the Pisek Gate in the second half of this year.
