Brno - After two years of repairs, the Baroque fountain Parnas is once again in operation in Zelný trh in Brno. Its filling with water was delayed by several days due to broadcasts of hockey matches of Kometa Brno and celebrations of its triumph in the extra league, said the spokesperson for the Brno-střed district, Denisa Kapitančiková. The repairs cost a quarter of a million crowns.
The fountain from the late 17th century was reconstructed in several phases. First, experts had to restore the stone and metal elements, such as the rocky outcrop, sculptural decorations, the exterior surfaces of the basin, staircase steps, and bollards with chains. "Furthermore, the fountain was repaired last year, when the statue of Allegory of Europe at the top of Parnas was restored, which could not be merely conserved due to its almost critical condition," Kapitančiková stated. Therefore, according to her, it was necessary to restore the statue on site.
The basin of the Parnas fountain has the shape of a six-pointed star and symbolizes a cave. It was built between 1690 and 1695 according to the design of architect Jan Bernard Fischer of Erlach.
The entire basin is composed of accumulated stone blocks of various types of crinoidal limestone, which was quarried from Brno's Stránská skála. Embedded in its mass are sculptural allegories of powers, including Greece, Babylonia, Persia, and the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation.
