The pilot project of picnic spots in Prague's Stromovka has started operation

Grilling in Prague's Stromovka park is one of the most popular summer activities. The City Hall of Prague has therefore commissioned the creation of several quality spots with picnic and grilling facilities. The pilot location in the area between the railway tracks and the Vltava River has just opened. The designer of the proposal, which cleverly combines a concrete grill, concrete platforms with authentic imprints of local tree leaves, and atypical oak furniture, is landscape architect Martina Forejtová from the studio Land05.
This summer we are spending more time in the city than ever before. Sitting in the park with friends, gathering for a barbecue or an afternoon picnic can greatly refresh the work week. The investor of the project, the City Hall of Prague, decided to emphasize the potential of these leisure spots in Stromovka Park. Thus, a pilot project of picnic spots was created, where visitors do not have to deal with trampled mud from rain, damaged worn grass, or bring their own grill.
The new picnic area consists of two concrete platforms, which are imprinted with leaves and branches from local trees. The rough texture and color of the concrete blend into the natural environment. The shallow impressions of the leaves and branches enhance the character of the place.

“The picnic spot project in Stromovka is our original design including the platforms, seating, and grill. We have nurtured and cherished it from the very beginning. The leaves we imprinted into the concrete platform were gathered in Stromovka in autumn and preserved in glycerin over the winter. As soon as spring arrived, we did a few tests with the construction and fine-tuned the concrete mix. The natural decoration emphasizes the character of the place. I must say that I particularly love similar unique places that respond to the given environment and context, and I can't imagine a good realization without them,” describes architect Martina Forejtová from the landscape architecture studio Land05.

In the middle of the larger platform, you will find a custom concrete grill in the shape of a long prism, which was designed and manufactured specifically for this project. The modern design responds to the urban park. Consideration was also given to resistance to vandalism. The dark gray color of the grill stands out well against the light platform.

An atypical wooden table, benches, and seating blocks complement the grill with seating. The architect emphasized not only original design but also strength, load resistance, and primarily minimal maintenance when creating the proposal. All wooden elements of the furniture are made from high-quality oak wood.

The picnic spot will become a natural attraction for a large number of park visitors. It is also anticipated that the movement of people will naturally extend beyond the concrete platform. The surroundings have therefore been landscaped with durable gravel turf. This prevents trampling and degeneration of the lawns, and the area copes well with the foot traffic instead of suffering from it.

The architectural studio Land05 has prepared designs for four more picnic spots. Each location responds to the arrangement of existing trees and is entirely different. If the pilot project proves successful, additional spots for urban grilling and relaxation will gradually appear in Stromovka.
