The new building in the area of the Brno educational center Otevřená zahrada of the Partnerství Foundation won the Jury Award in the Passive House of the Year 2017 competition. The competition seeks, maps, and honors the most interesting energy-efficient houses in the Czech Republic. The building of Otevřená zahrada belongs to unique examples of green administrative buildings in the Czech territory. The announcement took place on February 8 at the EXPO Praha Letňany exhibition center as part of the For Pasiv fair. “We want to lead by example and show that building smart and sustainable structures pays off. It is our contribution to the current discussion about climate change. The success of global climate policy depends on millions of local specific measures by municipalities, companies, households – and there are enormous reserves precisely in construction,” says Miroslav Kundrata, director of the Partnerství Foundation. The building of Otevřená zahrada is unique primarily in that it monitors energy and water consumption through a Lucid system. There are over 70 measuring devices and several hundred sensors throughout the area that regularly provide the system with necessary data. This data is displayed in real-time on the website of the area. “Everyone can see how kilowatts are flowing with us, how cubic meters of water are running, or how sunlight energy is converted into electricity,” explains operations manager Vlastimil Rieger, adding: “Thanks to monitoring, we know that, for example, by utilizing rainwater, we save fifty-five percent of drinking water, or that energy consumption for heating and cooling is seven times lower than in a typical administrative building.” The construction at Otevřená zahrada succeeded in competition with other projects from across the Czech Republic, evaluated by a professional jury consisting of designers, passive building experts, and architects.
