Ostrava – A series of events will support the Ostrava City Studio for Spatial Planning and Architecture (MAPPA) during the Architecture Day festival. The program will offer discussions, guided walks, and screenings. This is the fourth year they are joining this nationwide event. Today, the spokesperson for MAPPA, Zuzana Kotyzová, announced this to ČTK.
"MAPPA will contribute to the rich program with four events: a lecture with a discussion, a guided walk, and screenings of two films followed by a debate with the city architect and the studio's director, Ondřej Vysloužil," Kotyzová specified.
"Popularizing topics related to architecture and urbanism is one of our goals, as well as involving the public in city planning. Both are closely related – an educated and engaged civil society is the driving force behind the development of any modern city," Vysloužil stated.
On Monday, people can head to the exhibition space Za výlohou on Nádražní street at 5:00 PM, where a lecture with a discussion on the topic of a parking garage to be built behind the Cathedral of the Divine Redeemer will be prepared for them. Initially, the facility will serve almost exclusively for parking, but it may eventually be converted into a residential building. The design for the parking garage was created from an architectural competition organized by MAPPA in 2020.
On Wednesday, interested parties can visit the Černá louka exhibition area, whose urban study was completed by the studio this year. During the guided walk, they will learn about the planned transformation. They will be accompanied by the study authors – architects Pavel Řihák and Martina Mikócziová, along with landscape architect Daniela Davidová. "Černá louka has undergone dynamic development in the past – it hosted pig markets, a spoil tip was created here, and later a roller coaster was built on it; in the 1960s, it became a modern exhibition area. Today, it is a green space within sight of the central square that needs to be cultivated and, above all, have rules established to enhance its value in the future. During the guided walk, we will explain the specific changes the area will undergo, and we look forward to questions from visitors," Řihák said.
Also part of Architecture Day is the Film and Architecture festival, which makes architecture accessible through film. In collaboration with Minikino Ostrava, MAPPA will therefore offer screenings of two documentary films that will take place at Minikino on October 10. At 5:00 PM, there will be a screening of the Belgian film A Built Life by architect and director Elodie Degavre, which focuses on community housing. At 7:30 PM, the Danish film The World's Best City directed by Hans Christian Post, which reflects on the transformation of the Danish capital, Copenhagen, will begin screening. Architecture Day is held annually to mark World Architecture Day, which falls on the first Monday of October.
