Olomouc - Workers today began installing the first benches, bike racks, and trash bins at the renovated Lower Square in the historic center of Olomouc, so the square can be symbolically handed over to the public on Friday evening. The reconstruction of the Lower Square, which began last February and was completed this June, cost nearly 130 million crowns. The spokesperson for the Olomouc city council, Radka Štědrá, told CTK today that the Lower Square will be equipped with 30 benches, six metal spiral-shaped bike racks, and 17 trash bins by Friday. New lamps were already installed in the Lower Square in August, and the council plans to equip the neighboring Upper Square with them as well. The Lower Square will be ceremoniously handed over to the public on Friday evening as part of a cultural program accompanying this year’s European Heritage Days. "A festive fireworks display will also be part of it," Štědrá noted. The extensive reconstruction of the Lower Square lasted 18 months. The roadways, parking areas, sidewalks, and engineering networks were renovated. The Marian Column, which was last repaired 20 years ago, was also restored. The restoration of this national cultural monument cost about one million crowns. The city council managed to obtain a grant from the regional operational program for the reconstruction of the Lower Square, which will cover 85 percent of the costs. The reconstruction of the neighboring Upper Square, in which the city hall stands at its center, was completed in 2002. The repair of the central square cost about 60 million crowns.
