Prague – The Glass Palace in Prague 6 will receive a new roof. The reconstruction of the roof of the building at Freedom Square is expected to cost 19.9 million crowns and should be completed in the spring of 2022. Subsequent adjustments will include, among other things, modifications to the ventilation systems in the building, which is owned by the municipality. This follows from the documents related to the public contract and information provided to ČTK by the spokesperson for the city district, Jiří Hannich.
"Given that the building is a cultural monument, all work is being continuously consulted on and approved by representatives of heritage care," said the councilor of Prague 6, Eva Smutná (independent for TOP 09), who is responsible for strategic development and heritage care.
The replacement of the roof covering, reconstruction of the chimneys, and other roof adjustments for the building, whose design originated from the proposal of architect Richard Podzemný, are currently being carried out by workers from PRO URBAN. The company won the public contract that Prague 6 announced this summer.
According to representatives of the municipality, the goal is for the building to have better thermal technical properties and water resistance after the renovation. Companies can apply for the currently announced tender for the development of project documentation for the reconstruction of the ventilation, cooling, and heating systems in the building until December 14.
The roof of the Glass Palace will be accessible, allowing people to use it for relaxation. This was similarly the case about 80 years ago after the completion of the functionalist building. At that time, according to information on the municipality's website, there was a sunbathing terrace with loungers and a bar at the top of the building.
The trapezoidal shaped building was designed by architect Podzemný for the Provincial Bank. Since 1958, the building has been a cultural monument. The six-story building is connected to two lower wings that face Československé armády and Terronská streets. Currently, the building houses commercial spaces, apartments, and the ceremonial hall of Prague 6.
