Opava - The Opava city hall canceled the tender for a company that will ensure a comprehensive reconstruction of the ice hockey stadium for approximately 260 million crowns. Although three candidates applied for the competition, none submitted a price offer in the second round. According to the candidates, the reason was the short time allotted for the construction implementation. The city is thus preparing a new competition. It should not affect the start of the reconstruction scheduled for the beginning of April. Opava’s mayor Tomáš Navrátil (ANO) said this to reporters today.
"The parameters of the competition allowed for 600 days for implementation. This deadline seemed short to all companies," the mayor stated. Therefore, the city terminated the competition, and the project team is preparing the announcement of a new one. "They are processing comments that arose from both rounds. So that the assignment is comprehensive," Navrátil said. According to him, the new competition should be announced within a week. The stadium should be operational by the end of March, and reconstruction is set to begin on April 1st.
During the repairs, the teams that used the ice surface will have to improvise. The city is seeking alternative options for all age categories. Surrounding ice rinks will be utilized, and a temporary ice surface for training is also being prepared. "The men's league, however, requires a licensed stadium. Thus, the men will have to play in surrounding stadiums or at opponents' venues,” the mayor said.
The building from the 1950s is dilapidated. The aim of the project is a modern building that can also be used for cultural and social events. The city has an architectural study that cleans the original historical hall of successive extensions and allows the original steel structure to stand out.
New stands for 2,000 spectators are proposed on the original concrete steps of the stadium. The associated architecturally unworthy extensions connected to the hall from the southwest side will be removed by builders and replaced with a new annex, including a restaurant and lounge.
There will also be areas for practicing shooting, stability, skating speed, and starts behind the puck. The space for practicing hockey skills is designed with youth camp organization in mind. Training needs will be complemented by modern spaces for strength training and a gym. The project also emphasizes regeneration, including massage cabins, a Finnish sauna, a steam sauna, a cooling pool, and a relaxation area.
"The revitalization of the area includes the restoration of the historical hall with an emphasis on the technical industrial quality of the building. The overall calm and clear space will create an impression of a hockey arena, restoring a sense of grandeur. Part of the ground floor of the hall will be glassed in," added city spokesman Roman Konečný.
