Olomouc - The Olomouc City Hall today commenced the long-planned reconstruction of Lower Square in the historic center of the city. Repairs will last until the middle of next year. The costs of the extensive reconstruction, including archaeological surveys that began last autumn, will amount to approximately 128 million crowns. Most of this will be covered by grants from European funds, Deputy Mayor Martin Major (ODS) told ČTK today.

Part of the reconstruction of Lower Square, which is located in the city’s heritage reserve, will include repairs to its surface and engineering networks, including connections to individual buildings, the construction of new furniture, and the planting of greenery.
"Parking will also be addressed. Instead of the center of the square, motorists will be able to park their vehicles around its perimeter. However, this change will not mean a significant loss of parking spaces," Major stated.
The repairs have begun at the entrance from Lafayette Street, which is impassable due to construction. "Access from other streets and parking in Lower Square is not yet restricted. The square will likely be completely closed at the beginning of April. Only supply vehicles will be able to enter the construction site by agreement with the contractor," said the deputy.
The reconstruction is preceded by archaeological exploration of the square, which should continue in two locations until the end of June. In other areas, archaeologists will only conduct oversight.
The city hall has managed to secure a grant from the regional operational program for the project, which will cover 85 percent of the costs.
