Over 31 thousand visits, tours with assistance service for the blind, and a world music premiere – that was Open House Brno 2024

Last year's attendance record for Open House Brno was broken. The seventh edition of the popular Brno architecture and urbanism festival recorded a total of 31,912 visits, which is 4,000 more than the previous year. Nearly 2,000 additional listens for our individual tour podcasts were noted. The highest interest was in tours of the AZ Tower, Villa Engelsmann, and Tesař Villa; from the curatorial intention, it was the Logopedic Primary and Nursery School in the historic Rohrer Villa with a modern extension or the Romani center DROM. The blind were also able to enjoy a tandem ride at the Brno Velodrome or experience what it feels like to stand on the tallest building in the Czech Republic.
“I want to thank all the festival visitors, whose interest motivates us to innovate the program and seek new forms of accompanying programs. I was pleasantly surprised by the interest in places directly related to this year's themes of inclusion and accessibility. I am convinced that cities should be easily navigable for all their inhabitants and should transform with regard to people with any form of disadvantage. It is inspiring to experience so-called aha moments and discover what can actually be a barrier. I perceive the festival as a way of mutual closeness between people, and I am very glad that Open House Brno is fulfilling this goal,” evaluates this year's edition the creative director of the festival, Lucie Pešl Šilerová of the Spolek Kultura & Management.
This year's edition offered a total of 116 locations, of which 42 were included in various ways in the curatorial intention of Inclusion and Accessibility. Access to the most sought-after places with necessary reservations was booked within seconds, and reservations were needed for 48 places in total. There were 76 locations accessible without reservations, with some places offering narrated tours with reservations and free individual tours. There were also twenty-two accompanying events such as workshops, lectures, exhibitions, and musical performances. Festival visitors also experienced the world premiere of the Composition for Electric Guitar and Three String Instruments by Ondřej Kyas, performed by the Diversa Quartet. Participants of the weekend event can evaluate the entire course of the festival in questionnaires. The feedback will help the organizers with the preparations and improvements for the following editions.
“The festival could not take place without volunteers and the willingness of the owners of the various sites. One of the largest owners is the Statutory City of Brno and the institutions it owns or manages, so we are very grateful to the city for its financial and organizational support and cooperation, and to Mayor Markéta Vaňková for the patronage she provided to this year's edition. We would also like to thank CTP and the gastro businesses that made the festival enjoyable for our visitors with discounts. We appreciate the dozens of foreign volunteers from festivals in Vienna, Tallinn, and Dublin, as well as the overall support from the 14 cities that participated in the Open House Europe consortium this year, as sharing experiences is another step towards improving Open House Brno,” thanks the partners, festival spokesman Vratislav Vozník.
On the website and on social media, the organizers will be adding interesting details from the 2024 edition as well as highlights from other European Open Houses throughout the year. The festival is also part of Open House Worldwide, which is a network of more than fifty metropolises around the world hosting architecture festivals for the public. The events held annually attract more than two million people worldwide. Brno has been part of this network since 2018.
