Pardubice - The appellate court in Pardubice will start dealing today with the case of Pavel Škorpil and Jiří Khol, who participated in the project of the roof of the sports hall in Česká Třebová. Its structure collapsed on January 14, 2017, during a floorball match, and all about 80 people managed to escape. The district court last September imposed suspended sentences for general endangerment due to negligence on both men. The defendants appealed against the verdict.

According to the court expert, the roof collapsed due to a faulty and under-dimensioned connection of the lower chord, which had been divided into two parts. The structure was also not sufficiently braced, and regular inspections were lacking during construction. The damage reached approximately 20 million crowns.

Designer Pavel Škorpil was sentenced to two years in prison with a conditional postponement of two years, while the structural engineer Jiří Khol, who was supposed to supervise the project, received the same sentence. The court also imposed financial penalties, 200,000 crowns on Škorpil and 100,000 crowns on Khol. Additionally, Škorpil received a three-year ban on activity.
