Prague - The state prosecutor's office has been dealing for nine months with which of them is responsible for the investigation of the overpriced construction of the Brno Palace of Justice. This is reported by today's Lidové noviny (LN). The construction exceeded its budget by more than a billion. The police are dealing with a criminal complaint filed last August by President of the Supreme Control Office (NKÚ) František Dohnal, but no charges have yet been filed.
According to LN, Dohnal entrusted his suspicions to the District Prosecutor's Office for Prague 2 last July, as the Ministry of Justice, under whose jurisdiction the judiciary falls, is located there. However, in November, the district prosecutors decided that the alleged damage could be so high that the case belongs to the High Prosecutor's Office in Prague. From there, the file was sent in February to the High Prosecutor's Office in Olomouc, which covers the whole of Moravia, with the justification that the investment project took place in Brno.
However, the High Prosecutor in Olomouc, Milena Hojovcová, excluded herself and the office from the case in April due to bias, so it should now be decided by the Supreme Prosecutor's Office who will take over the matter.
Some prosecutors sharply criticize the transfers. "If this is only because (Hojovcová) previously worked at the Municipal Prosecutor's Office in Brno, then that is quite insufficient," said a high-ranking Moravian prosecutor who wished to remain anonymous to LN.
The case is being handled by the Unit for Combating Corruption and Financial Crime at the police. According to the spokesperson of the unit, Roman Skřepka, the police are still investigating the matter and no charges have yet been filed.
Last year, the NKÚ found that the errors and deficiencies of the Regional Court in Brno during the management of the project for the construction of the Palace of Justice in Brno and the inconsistent and insufficient control activities of the Ministry of Justice caused the estimated costs of 786 million crowns to increase to more than two billion crowns.
