Czech Aeroholding knows the winners of the two-round urban transportation competition for the conceptual design of public space in front of Terminals 1 and 2, which was announced in June this year in collaboration with the Institute for Planning and Development of the Capital City of Prague. The best proposal presenting a vision for the new organization of ground transportation along with an urban concept for the public space, improving the recreational areas in front of the terminals, was evaluated by the jury as the proposal submitted by the architectural studio Rala, s.r.o., led by architect Radek Lampa. Vaclav Havel Airport Prague sees tens of thousands of passengers daily, and this number is expected to increase in the future; just in the past year, their number grew by 7.5% year-on-year. The influx of passengers brings demands for the development of public space in front of the largest Czech airport, which is becoming inadequate from a long-term perspective. Therefore, Czech Aeroholding, in collaboration with the Institute for Planning and Development of the Capital City of Prague (IPR), announced a transport-urban competition aimed at gaining professional insight into the organization of transportation and the overall future concept of public outdoor spaces. In the first round of the competition, 15 competition proposals were submitted, from which the commission selected the five best proposals that advanced to the second round, where the author teams further developed their overall solution concepts. The final winner was chosen by a seven-member competition jury composed of representatives from the professional public and representatives of Czech Aeroholding. No second place was awarded by the jury; the third place is shared by the proposals from Atelier D3A and the author collective CMC Architects and Atelier DUA. “The winning project closely aligns with our intention to reorganize the transportation solution and modernize and enhance the recreational spaces in front of the airport terminals,” said Václav Řehoř, Chairman of the Board of Czech Aeroholding. According to the jury, the winning proposal best addresses the very challenging task of reorganizing transportation and establishing a new concept for public spaces in front of the terminals. The proposal brings a modern idea of reducing surface transportation while prioritizing pedestrians, who are the main users of the public space at ground level. The space in front of the terminals also becomes a cultivated extension of the airport halls in the winning proposal's concept. “Once the period for submitting objections is over, we will initiate further discussions with the author of the winning concept regarding collaboration. The first phase will follow with a territorial study, that is, the completion of the solution concept, based on which further steps will be determined. Our priority will be the new transportation solution with modern and clear navigation for drivers, organization of taxi services, or parking on the airport premises,” Řehoř outlined the next steps. “I am glad that Czech Aeroholding has decided to conduct an architectural competition. As an important and respected institution, it sets a positive example for others,” states the director of IPR Prague, Petr Hlaváček. “The development of the airport is also one of the priorities of the Metropolitan Plan, as well as the upcoming strategic plan,” he adds.
The competition proposals will be made available to the public through a planned exhibition of all submitted proposals, which is expected to take place next year at Vaclav Havel Airport Prague. More information about the competition can be found at www.iprpraha.cz/letiste, where all competition proposals will also be available for viewing for 14 days. The transformation of terminal buildings and their surroundings is part of the long-term goal of Prague Airport to enhance the time passengers spend at the airport. This is part of the "We are changing the airport for you" project, which also encompasses changes in parking and in the food service area. More information >
