Nový Jičín - A statue that adorned the town hall in Nový Jičín until 1945, when it was removed, could return to the back of the building. However, the city does not want to place a replica on the town hall, but a completely new artwork, said Deputy Mayor Miloš Lossmann to ČTK.
He added that the city only knows the original appearance of the statue from photographs and creating a replica based on them would be nearly impossible. Therefore, the town hall is considering taking up the offer from a local prominent artist and teacher at the elementary art school, Jan Zemánek, who has offered his statue of a pilgrim as a gift to the city. "It should be a symbol of arriving and departing," Lossmann stated. The city is characterized by arrivals and departures, according to him. "I mean various historical events, such as the displacement of the population and the arrival of new inhabitants," he noted.
The statue is to be up to two meters tall and the city will only cover the costs associated with its production, which amounts to approximately 80,000 crowns. The town hall would like to unveil the statue on the occasion of the traditional city celebrations, which will take place in September.
