Poděbrady – A new footbridge for pedestrians and cyclists over the Elbe in Poděbrady between Na Vinici Street and the Polabec district will be elevated. The city leadership had a choice between two options, whose proposals were developed in the study phase by the Pontex company. The urbanism and transport committee, as well as the public during the presentation of the study, preferred the elevated option over the arch variant. This choice has now also been approved by the city councilors.
"The urbanism and transport committee was familiarized with the study, a public presentation of this study took place, and there was majority support for the elevated bridge option from all these discussions," said city councilor Dušan Zezulka (ODS) before the resolution was approved. Following this, the preparation of the project documentation will take place according to him.
City architect Milan Košař compared the arch variant in his evaluation to a smaller bridge, while the elevated version is closer to a footbridge. Similarly, Zezulka summarized the reasons for the selection in response to a query from ČTK. "The arch variant has more mass, while the elevated version has only two relatively low bridge suspensions to which the structure is attached, and it appears much lighter from the perspective of the cycle path," said Zezulka.
The city is now preparing a tender for the design work, aiming to launch it during the summer. "If we resolve all matters concerning the construction permits by 2025, we would like to start construction around the middle of 2026," Zezulka said.
The new crossing of the Elbe is intended to facilitate the journey from the outskirts of the city to several sports facilities on Ostende on the other side of the river. It is also planned to connect to cycle paths on both sides. The original proposal included the construction of a parking lot in Polabec. However, the city leadership stated earlier that it would be a separate building project.
The preliminary cost of the footbridge, including the cycle path on it, is about 85.5 million Czech crowns excluding VAT. Another 35 million without tax is expected to be spent on the parking lot. The cycle path along the riverbank and the relocation of utilities, according to the study, will cost 17 million crowns. However, precise costs will emerge only from the project documentation. The city will seek to obtain a grant, for example, from the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure.
