Brno - The original rural appearance will be restored to Freedom Square in Vyškov-Dědice by next summer, which is the birthplace of the "first workers' president" of Czechoslovakia, Klement Gottwald (1896-1953). During communism, it was adorned with his giant statue. The area was entirely paved, as military parades took place there, stated Vyškov's deputy mayor Roman Celý today.

By May next year, the square, where hundreds of soldiers once marched, is expected to feature the original water pump, a space for building a traditional maypole, a fountain, a pergola with benches, or an area where the residents of Dědice can play their favorite pétanque.
The reconstruction of the square began in recent days and will cost seven million crowns. "The project was created according to the wishes of the citizens and reflects the rural character of Dědice," added Celý.
Before 1989, numerous communist delegations visited Dědice to view Gottwald's birthplace. This attraction of the past regime was completely forgotten after its fall. The last reminder of communism in Dědice was precisely the shape of the square.
