Brno - Students from the Brno Faculty of Architecture today unveiled an artistic piece made of spruce battens called Spine for Brno in the courtyard of the Brno-střed town hall. It can serve as a bench or a shelter, and some have already nicknamed it the spine or dragon tail. The proposal was developed by students during an experimental studio where they were tasked with designing a multifunctional architectural object that not only serves as urban furniture but also complements the environment.
The structure is three meters high and four and a half meters long. "Given the limited budget, we worked with spruce battens from the beginning. They are connected using wooden joints and further reinforced with beech dowels and glue," explained architect Martin Kaftan, under whose guidance the students constructed the design.
Councilor Michal Doležel (Žít Brno) stated that the work vaguely reminds him of a dragon's skeleton, which is a characteristic Brno symbol. "After the Old Town Hall, Brno-střed will have its dragon, and I believe it will become a new landmark of the town hall," said Doležel.
Students were inspired at the international workshop Mood for Wood in Poznań. "We saw cooperation between cities and the academic environment there, and the results from other cities motivate us," said project coordinator Nicol Galeová.
