Prague - This morning, a new check-in center of Czech Railways was ceremoniously opened at Prague's Main Train Station. It includes new ticket counters, which will begin serving passengers today at 3:00 PM.

The General Director of the railways, Petr Žaluda, compared the remodeled spaces of the former luggage storage to an airport. "I believe that Prague's station will become one of the most beautiful railway stands in Europe,” he stated. The opening of the new ticket counters marked the completion of the second phase of the "Main Station" reconstruction.
The investor in the reconstruction is the Italian company Grandi Stazioni. It has already restored almost the entire northern section of the station. The first store opened here at the end of 2007, and at the beginning of this June, an additional 3,000 square meters of retail space was added.
There is, for example, a gift shop, a mobile operator representative, an eyewear retailer, a shop with young sporty fashion, a tobacco and daily press store, as well as a praline shop. Today, a new fast-food restaurant, Burger King, was opened.
Grandi Stazioni intends to invest nearly one billion crowns in the reconstruction. In return, it will receive the Main Train Station buildings from Czech Railways for a 30-year lease and will commercially utilize all the areas.
The reconstruction began at the end of 2006 and will last at least another three years, as it is necessary to maintain train operations. During this time, the station is expected to transform into a modern center not only for passengers but also for the residents of Prague.
Prague's Main Train Station is the largest station in the Czech Republic, handling up to 100,000 passengers daily and generating about ten percent of ČD's revenue from passenger transport. It underwent its last major renovation in 1979 when a new building was completed towards Vrchlického Sady.
